The Indian Walk-In Center's Youth Program aims to provide prevention services for American Indian and Alaska Native Youth. The program intends to teach youth self-awareness and self-respect using cultural traditions and contemporary prevention and education approaches to increase developmental skills needed to succeed in life.
Program Goal The youth program is an education, prevention and counseling program. The program staff works closely with other youth service providers to ensure youth participants have access to needed services. The overall goal of the youth program is to promote healthy development and strong positive family connections. Youth are educated on the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, in addition to lessons in gaining positive life and communication skills. The program focus is on alcohol and substance abuse intervention and prevention activities for youth. The core of the program revolves around a structured series of 10 week presentations focusing on substance abuse education, healthy lifestyle choices, peer identification, and presentation on American Indian history and culture to foster improved self-esteem. The structured program provides information on additional activities that are ongoing and open to all youth throughout the year. Academic support services are available upon request. For youth needing counseling services, treatment plans are developed based on assessment and youth are enrolled in adolescent substance abuse treatment, receive individual therapy and participate in additional support groups.
