Health Programs
The History
Since the 1950s, American Indian and Alaska
Native communities have suffered a drastic increase in diabetes
due to rapid transitions in both lifestyle and environment.
American Indians and Alaska Natives are more than two times more
likely to have diabetes than the general population of the
United States.
The Goal
The purpose of the Diabetes Wellness Program at
the Indian Walk-In Center is to create awareness, encourage
prevention and improve the on-going health care of American
Indian and Alaska Native individuals and families living with
diabetes. We assist people in leading a healthier lifestyle,
including at-risk individuals who have not yet been diagnosed,
through an assessment to determine diabetes risk factors -- an
important first step in preventing or identifying the symptoms
of this disease.
